Matthew 7:12 - “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”
Jesus said in ‘everything’.
That’s quite comprehensive. It leaves no room for negotiation. Everything is, everything! Treat others the way you want to be treated in all of our lives.
In reality though, putting others’ interests and needs above our own isn’t going to just happen. It’s going to take something called love. And that’s what following Jesus is all about. Love for God, love for ourselves, love for others (see Matthew 22:40), regardless of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, background - God is love.
We might not agree with how people live their lives, but love isn’t dependent upon agreement. Love loves. And hearts changed and saved by Jesus love. It’s how it is.
Ask God to help you today to love others – a love that will treat others with respect, kindness, favour, generosity, grace – all like the things we’d love in return.
- How do you feel about doing to others what you would have them do to you? How is that going for you?
- What ONE thing can you do today in your work situation / family / church to make sure you treat others in the way you’d like to be treated?
- How do you feel when you aren’t treated as you would like to be treated and what might you do to prepare for that if it happens?
