Locked Doors

John 20:19-20

That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord!

Jesus has risen. Word is out that He has appeared to Mary. But the disciples aren’t so sure. They’re scared. They’re fearful for their lives. They’re hurting and grieving.

Jesus, THE great hope, has been crucified. They had no plan B.

So what do they do? They do what we all do when we’re running scared. They locked the doors:

That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders.

Fear locks doors.

But Jesus, unfazed by fear, unafraid of the atmosphere of fear that had built up, walks right in:

Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them!

There’s no mention of Jesus ringing the door bell, or knocking politely. He just walks right on in, through the locked doors, and changes the atmosphere:

Peace be with you,” he said.

‘As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord!

Jesus brings peace and joy to that room, and to locked hearts, to fearful situations. Jesus walks right on in.

This Easter, open the door of your heart to Jesus. He’s looking for a way in. Perfect love (Jesus) casts out all fear (1 John 4:18).

Question for application:

  • What’s one thing you can change in your life this Easter to let God in, and kick fear out?
