How To Love People (Especially When You Don't Always Like Them)
Jesus calls us to love others. Which is easy with the people we like. But what about the people who have offended us, hurt us, hurt our loved ones or...just get on our nerves?!
God is love. He isn’t just ‘about’ love, or it isn’t a part of his character. He is LOVE personified (1 John 4:16). We CAN love and MUST love because God first loved us, the unlovable. The love of God in our hearts has made it possible, but not always easy. We have to work at it, be intentional about it, work towards it.
We can love others by;
Praying and naming them before God - Be honest about who and why you might find it hard to love someone. And let the Holy Spirit work in your heart.
Refusing to trash talk about them - We can take captive our thoughts and words that are unloving even towards those people that irritate us.
Serve people well - As we show ‘undeserved’ kindness to others, we find our hearts warming towards even those people we naturally struggle to relate to.
Hit repeat - In other words, keep praying, keep serving, keep being renewed in our minds and our words as we seek to show love to others, as Christ has shown love to us. By this love, and this alone, the world will know that we are really Christians! (John 15:35).
